Project HIE
Advancing knowledge. Supporting innovation. Protecting newborn futures.
Our Purpose
Project HIE is a Niyan Foundation initiative dedicated to supporting responsible research, clinical advancement, and evidence-based approaches related to Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) in newborns.
HIE can occur when a newborn’s brain does not receive sufficient oxygen and blood flow around the time of birth. Its effects can vary considerably, and affected children may require specialized medical and developmental care.
Through Project HIE, Niyan Foundation seeks to contribute to efforts that improve prevention, early recognition, treatment, neuroprotection, rehabilitation, and long-term outcomes for newborns affected by HIE.
Areas of Focus
Research into HIE prevention, risk reduction, earlier recognition, diagnosis, neurological monitoring, and assessment.
Neonatal neuroprotection and treatment research, including therapeutic hypothermia, evidence-based interventions, and careful investigation of emerging and adjunctive therapies.
Seizure recognition, monitoring and management research, alongside neuroimaging and biomarker research.
Feeding, motor, communication and developmental outcomes, early-intervention and rehabilitation research, and long-term neurodevelopmental follow-up.
Research designed to improve quality of life for children affected by HIE.
Family-centered neonatal and post-discharge care, education, and dissemination of reliable HIE information.
Research Principles
Supported research should follow appropriate scientific, ethical, and institutional standards.
Priority is given to work with the potential to improve the lives and developmental outcomes of newborns and children affected by HIE.
The Foundation supports careful investigation of promising approaches while distinguishing established medical care from experimental or investigational treatment.
The experiences and needs of children and their caregivers should remain an important part of efforts to improve HIE care.
Research Partnerships
Niyan Foundation welcomes opportunities to engage with qualified hospitals, universities, neonatal centers, researchers, clinicians, and other appropriate institutions whose work aligns with Project HIE.
Depending on available resources and the nature of a project, support may include research grants or contributions, equipment or resource support, educational initiatives, collaborative programs, or other assistance consistent with the Foundation’s charitable mission and applicable requirements.

Our vision is a future in which fewer newborns experience preventable brain injury, effective treatment can begin as early as possible, and every child affected by HIE has the opportunity to reach their greatest possible potential.
Project HIE is a charitable and research-support initiative. Niyan Foundation does not provide medical diagnoses, prescribe treatment, or replace the advice of licensed healthcare professionals. Information provided through this initiative is for educational and charitable purposes. Decisions concerning a child’s diagnosis or treatment should be made with qualified medical professionals.
